Reception Class

Reception

Welcome to Reception at St Thomas’. You will be fully supported as you build relationships with your new friends and teachers’ in your new school as you get used to the routines in place designed to help you become a confident and independent learner.

In Reception we will develop children’s basic skills and understanding in Phonics, Reading, Writing and Mathematics through daily direct teaching sessions. Alongside this we will provide the children with many opportunities to develop their own interests and further their learning through Continuous Provision activities through the use of both the indoor and outdoor environment. At St Thomas’ we are very lucky to have some exciting visitors who bring our learning to life including the school nurse and the animal man.

Our main aim is to ensure that the children at St Thomas’ access the Non-Statutory EYFS Framework ‘Development Matters’ which includes the 7 areas of learning and development that are all equally important and inter-connected:

We will also ensure that the key characteristics of effective learning: playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically are incorporated into all areas of our learning.

Autumn

The Autumn term is a very exciting time for the children at St Thomas’ as they begin to make and develop new friendships. We will focus on Topics including ‘All About Me’ where they will explore their likes and dislikes, who is in their family and how they have changed as they have grown. They will learn about how they use their senses to explore the world and think about ways in which they can stay healthy. The children will also think about different festivals and celebrations around the world including Christmas, Diwali, Birthdays, Weddings and Baptisms making comparisons between them and how different cultures celebrate such events.

Spring

In the Spring term we will continue to explore the world around us as they learn about a range of Mini-beasts through Literacy texts and Topic based activities. The children will explore the features of different mini-beasts identifying similarities and differences between them. They will learn about the life-cycle and habitats of each of these mini-beasts whilst developing an understanding of how to care for the environment in which they live. The children will also explore different modes of transport from past to present including boats, aeroplanes and even a visit into space gaining an awareness of the planets in our Solar System.

Summer

In the final term of Reception the children will develop an understanding of what plants need to help them grow. They will further develop their understanding of the world around them through the exploration of a range of sea creatures and their habitats making comparisons between them. They will also learn about the key features of a range of different environments including their own locality and the seaside.

Homework will be sent home every Friday linked to the Weekly Phonics sessions taught in class. We also encourage you to listen to your child read their school books at home 3 times a week, providing you with a Reading Record for you to write comments about your child’s reading and comprehension skills.
