You are about to commence the first year in Upper Key Stage 2 in your primary school journey at St Thomas’. In Year 5, you will be embarking on some amazing learning opportunities, which will spark excitement and prepare you for your last two years in primary school.  Year 5 is all about growing, maturing as well as embedding and developing your knowledge and skills in all areas of the curriculum. You will enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum, taking part in French, Music, Art & Design, Design Technology, Computing, PSHE as well as core subject areas.  Awaiting you is a learning experience, which will provide you with memories that will last a lifetime!

The first term in Year 5 begins with a history topic where children will learn key features of the Maya Civilisation. They will develop their understanding of the achievements of the earliest civilisations and why the Mayans were so significant. Geography in autumn allows children to develop their location knowledge of the Americas; explore different countries, cities and human and geographical features. Children will also explore continents, draw comparisons and explore contrasting areas, finding out about the landscape, climate and locations in each area. During Religious Education, children will find out about Christian prayer and its importance. Forces, Earth, and Space are Year 5’s Science topic this term where children will learn about the planets and the solar system. An exciting Design Technology topic will allow the children to design, plan and make their own solar powered Mars Rover.

During this term, children will develop their knowledge and understanding of the Ancient Greeks. An exciting topic awaits where they will learn about the influence the Ancient Greeks have on our lives today. Science lessons will allow the children to investigate solids, liquids and gases, compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets. In Geography, children will explore mountain environments, focussing on developing their location knowledge and investigating their place knowledge of mountains in the UK, Europe and America. Children will also develop their understanding of human and physical features of mountain environments. Religious Education will allow children to develop their understanding of temptation and the ways we choose what is right or wrong.

The last term in Year 5 is a truly exciting one where children have the chance to learn all about The Black Country, developing their understanding of historical concepts such as cause and consequence, continuity, and change by looking at the growth of an area. They will look at how evidence is used to make historical claims and begin to understand connections between national and international history. An exciting Science unit will allow children to investigate how animals and plants reproduce as part of their life cycle and that in every life cycle there are distinct processes and stages. Children will begin to understand how reproduction is important to the survival of the species. Religious Education will allow children to explore right and wrong with Christians and Humanists. Children will also enjoy learning about the Five Pillars of Islam. The Geography unit this term will allow children to focus on developing their knowledge about diverse people and places, natural and human environments to deepen their understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
